Day 2

We began today by watching a great video outlining some of the issues children can face in attempting to learn how to read.  Something of personal interest, was the idea of making sure the child hears the proper way to pronounce different words (and parts of words), especially after they’ve mispronounced them.  This is of interest to me because my son is 22 months and in a very important stage of developing pre-reading skills, and as his vocabulary is growing I have realized an error in my ways.  For example, I have a set of golf clubs in my trunk which my son affectionately refers to as something along the lines of “golk-go”.  For weeks I have been thoroughly entertained by this; however, as I watched the video today I felt as though I ruined his chances of ever reading!  Well, slight exaggeration, but when I picked him up from the babysitters I sat down with him and the golf clubs and said it (properly) as many times as he would listen!
Today was our first assignment – a task analysis study on the reading process.  In pairs, we were to use a graphic organizing program of our choice to create our assignment.  My partner and I decided to use Smart Ideas instead of Inspiration or Kidspiration.  My partner Catherine was well versed in the Smart Ideas program and I certainly learned a lot from her about such a great program.  Information from Day 1, multiple readings (especially D.Sousa), and a plethora of web resources gave us the information needed to create our assignment.  Catherine was an awesome partner, besides taking the lead on Smart Ideas she was able to share a lot of excellent information she has attained through her teaching experiences, thanks Catherine!

Me and my I-pod spent a lovely day together today!  After class, I had to go home and get ready to coach soccer in Halifax.  Although it was blazing hot here in the Valley who knew what the weather would be like in the city, so naturally, I checked the weather!  Before taking off, I used my Z103.5 FM app to check the traffic in Halifax to make sure the roads were clear (they were).   I then downloaded a free soccer app to try and find a new warm up for practice, but it wasn’t the best, so I went with the warm up I was planning on; however, since then, I’ve read about some great coaching apps that I will look at buying in the future.  I mentioned earlier that I had a young son and I am pleased to say that my wife and I are expecting a second child in October.  I am even more pleased to report that our 25 week old fetus is the size of an eggplant….how do I know this you ask, it’s the what to expect when you’re expecting app of course!  I also bought an audio books for kids app today and tried it out at bed time, I really enjoyed it……..I think my son did too,….bonus!  If you don’t think audio books are catching on, check out this video
