Today’s class was all about the myriad uses of the ipod. After some demonstrations of apps that Barbara uses we were asked to begin our second assignment, which was to seek out 20 great apps that children can use to aid them in the reading process. As we’ve learned from our first assignment, the reading process is shockingly complex and therefore, not surprisingly, there are a huge number of apps that are available to help at every step along the way. Catherine and I are working together again and although we haven’t finished choosing our final list of 20 apps we have made some great progress. There truly is a huge number of apps out there to choose from and while many of them are only so-so, there are some excellent apps, some of which are even free.
Below you see a picture of a great app called word wall. It is definitely an app to take a look at for students who are beginning the phonological awareness aspect of their development, or an app to use with children who are learning slowly. It is very easy to use and works on such topics as word families, rhyming, phonemes, auditory perception, and more. It was $0.99 on itunes!
Another great app that I was introduced to today was the moving tales story app. There are a number of stories available for download, including Twas the Night Before Christmas – looks amazing! Please check the video below that features another story “the Pedlar Lady of Gushing Cross”.
What is great about this assignment is that at the end of it, we will have chosen 20 apps that encompass many of the aspects of the reading process. We will also be able to check out the apps of the other groups and immediately have an arsenal of apps that we can all take back to our schools (or homes) and put into use! Exciting stuff.
